Megatrends are driving the world. Telecommunication is one such driver. It enables the technologies that are fundamental in many applications, devices, and business models. But telecommunication is itself subject to the pressure of rapid advances. The mission for digital wireless communication systems is to fulfil the growing needs for reliable connectivity.

Currently, the telecom industry is introducing fifth generation (5G) cellular networks. 5G is to be established as the main wireless platform for industry and society at large. With the three different service categories of enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), ultrareliable and Low-latency Communications (uRLLC), and massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC), 5G will change the telecom industry.

The industrial sector is also undergoing a huge and related transformation with the digitalization of assets as part of the shift to Industry 4.0. To meet the resultant demand from industry for skilled 5G engineers, DADB and the Offenburg University of Applied Sciences, Germany, are organizing a winter semester in January 2024.

Implementation of the Winter University Program with 50 lessons of 45 minutes in 2 weeks (lectures and hands-on labs) with supervision by Prof. Dr. Axel Sikora and other professors from the Institute for Reliable Embedded Systems and Communication Electronics.

Credit system

  • The course is also assessed according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), which is expressed in ECTS points (study points). ECTS was developed by the Commission of the European Union to provide a common framework for the recognition of academic studies abroad.
  • 5 ECTS credits are awarded for the certificate.
  • Student will be awarded with 5 ECTS Credit upon the completion of the course


Professor Dr.-Ing. Axel Sikora holds a diploma of Electrical Engineering (Dipl.-Ing./M.Sc.) and a diploma of Business Administration (Dipl. Wirt.-Ing./MBA), both from Aachen Technical University.

He has done a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the Fraunhofer Institute of Microelectronics Circuits and Systems, Duisburg, with a thesis on SOI-technologies. After various positions in the telecommunications and semiconductor industry, he became a professor at the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University Loerrach in 1999. In 2011, he joined Offenburg University of Applied Sciences, where he leads the Institute of Reliable Embedded Systems and Communication Electronics (ivESK). Since 2016, he is also deputy member of the board and head of the “Software Solutions” division at Hahn-Schickard Association of Applied Research (Germany), one of the leading institute around Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) for Industry 4.0 applications in Germany. In 2002, he also founded the Steinbeis Transfer Center Embedded Design and Networking, which was successfully spun off as STACKFORCE GmbH in 2014.

His major interest is in the system development of efficient, energy-aware, autonomous, secure, and value-added algorithms and protocols for wired and wireless embedded communication.

Dr. Sikora is author, co-author, editor and co-editor of several textbooks and more than one two hundred peer-reviewed papers in the field of embedded design and wireless and wired networking. Amongst many other duties, he serves as Chairman of the Steering Board of the annual embedded world Conference, the world’s largest event on this topic.

  • After registration and payment of the full course fee, an official letter of invitation will be issued, which will be used for presentation at the German Embassy for the visa application. The invitation letter will be sent to you by registered mail after receipt of payment and you will also receive a scan copy by email.
  • For visa process we recommend you visit the website of the German Foreign Office for further information and read the visa regulations.
  • The costs for the issuing of the visa shall be covered by the participant.
  • Considering the possible long processing time at the embassy, it is recommended to register for the program early.


  • The program fees do not include insurance cover. All participants are required to take health insurance valid in Germany (preferably Europe). Please check with your insurance company whether it covers a stay in Germany. If not, you are required to purchase appropriate insurance.
  • In addition, we recommend accident and liability insurance. Students are liable for all culpably caused damages.
